Small businesses: how exposed is your cyber security?

20th May 2025

According to a survey from Digital.com, 51% of small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) do NOT have ANY cyber security measures in place*, putting them at great risk of cyber-attack.

Cyber security is difficult for everyone, particularly for SMBs, who lack the resources of bigger organisations and struggle to keep up with the latest advice and compliance as a result. Sadly, SMBs understand this: a more recent survey by Techaisle states that 68% of SMBs feel underprepared compared to larger businesses*2.

So, if small businesses understand the need for cyber security protection, why aren’t they doing anything about it? And what can they do to move past these limitations?

Costs – cyber security costs can be intimidating if budget is limited, as the best technology never comes cheap. However, there are steps SMBs can take that won’t cost much.

For example, training is one of the most important elements of cyber security best practice, as the more aware staff are of phishing attempts, the less likely it is that an attack will occur. Training can be found for free online and there is advice on the National Cyber Security Centre’s website*3, so it is worth investing time in.

There are many other steps SMBs can take for free, but talking to a cyber security provider is still a good investment: yes, it may be costly initially, but the amount it will save SMBs in the likely event of a cyber-attack – both financially and in terms of the SMBs reputation – is far greater.

Time – it takes a lot of time to implement, monitor and update cyber security measures, which is why we recommend outsourcing the problem to a cyber security provider. They can take the hassle away from the SMB, guaranteeing the best protection for your systems and giving businesses more time to focus on the stuff that matters to them.

Understanding – cyber security related issues can be intimidating. Cyber criminals use complex methods, and it can be difficult to know exactly what is needed, which can lead to SMBs doing nothing, out of confusion.

Partnering with a cyber security provider can help to counteract this: they can help you to understand exactly what protection you need in place and why, so you’re prepared for whatever threats may come.
