Zero Trust: the mindset that keeps you protected

8th May 2025

It is estimated that 60% of companies will consider Zero Trust* as a starting point for cyber security by 2025. Will you be one of them?

Usually, I would encourage people to trust each other: call me optimistic, but I think, a little more trust between people makes things easier.

Please though, don’t confuse my optimism for naivety – I understand that as much as there are plenty of trustworthy people in the world, there are those bad actors who will use any means to try and make money off of you: they can’t be trusted.

This has led to many organisations taking a “Zero Trust” approach to their IT security. Zero Trust companies build their cyber security around the philosophy of “never trust, always verify.” This means:

·         Every user and device must be continuously authenticated before accessing sensitive information.

·         This is implemented everywhere, including offsite IT setups and cloud infrastructures.

·         Users are granted the minimum level of access that they need to accomplish their tasks, reducing the risk of high-level data being leaked.

·         Networks are divided into smaller systems to limit where threats can spread to.

·         Security systems are constantly monitored and improved to give the best chance of stopping breaches.

·         Zero Trust companies almost always comply with the latest regulatory requirements.

Switching a business to a Zero Trust environment isn’t simple: as you can see from the steps above, it is a complex model, and it can require significant investment. Additionally, there can be pushback from staff about having to constantly re-enter passwords (and remember them).

However, the benefits outweigh any cost or adjustment period. By taking a Zero Trust mindset, and enforcing it across your business, you give cyber criminals no way to infiltrate. As much as the technology matters, having people who are dedicated to remaining aware of the risks is the most important aspect of your security.
