Free cyber security tools (that even IT amateurs can use)

17th October 2025

Cyber security isn’t cheap: what resources are available to you even if you are on a budget?

If you want great cyber security, your best bet is to have a team at the ready, monitoring and fighting threats 24/7 – exactly as we do! But we understand that for some working in extreme budget constraints, investing in this may not be viable.

While we would argue that cyber security is worth doing properly, because one attack could have a massive impact (and some security options are surprisingly affordable), here is a list of trusted security tools that anyone can use. It won’t replace a good SOC team or proper EDR, but it might provide better protection than you have!

Antivirus and anti-malware

·         Windows Defender – built-in to Windows, you may already be using this one! It provides real time protection, scanning files and processes using Microsoft’s threat database.

·         Malwarebytes Free – an on-demand malware scanner and remover, it detects and removes viruses, ransomware, spyware and adware. Available here.

·         Avast Free Antivirus – real-time protection with AI-powered scam detection. It scans files, monitors behaviour and isolates threats. Available here.

VPNs (Virtual Private Networks)

·         ProtonVPN – encrypts traffic and hides your IP address, no logs or ads. Available here.

·         Windscribe – has ad-blocking, firewall features, encrypts traffic and blocks trackers. Available here.

Password Managers

·         Bitwarden – stores and encrypts passwords across devices, using end-to-end encryption and secure cloud sync. Available here.

·         KeePass – an offline password manager, it stores passwords in an encrypted local database. Available here.

Browser Security Tools

·         uBlock Origin – blocks ads, trackers, malicious scripts and uses filter lists to prevent unwanted content from loading. Available here.

·         HTTPS Everywhere – forces secure HTTPS connections and redirects HTTP traffic to HTTPS when possible. Available here.

·         DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials – blocks trackers, providing private search. Prevents third-party scripts from loading and tracks privacy grades. Available here.

Hopefully these can help – as we said before, they are no substitute for a proper security solution, but it will be better than nothing!
