Which web browser is the most secure?

25th April 2025

Web browsers are a useful tool that most of us use every day, but which one provides the best cyber security? We’re going to rank the top 5 most used web browsers, breaking down what security measures each one has in place.

Of course, there are other browsers that offer high levels of security – such as Tor Browser, Epic Privacy Browser and LibreWolf, but as far fewer people use them, we’ve excluded them for this ranking.

Interestingly, Mozilla Firefox was on this list at one stage, and quite high up too, but they recently changed their terms and conditions. They removed a promise not to sell your data on to third parties – making them an unsecure option that we wouldn’t recommend using.

5. Opera: a browser I didn’t know existed until today, Norwegian made Opera has approximately 350 million users. While it has an inbuilt VPN (a unique feature), tracking protection, and regular updates. Occasionally, security issues are found but they are patched quickly.

4. Safari (Apple): it has intelligent tracking prevention, sandboxing and built-in privacy features. Safari has strong privacy controls and is energy efficient – the only downside is outside of Apple products, you can’t access many of the features it includes.

3. Microsoft Edge: the web browser that everyone tends to ignore, Microsoft Edge has sandboxing too, but also a smart screen filter and integration with Windows Defender. While it has a limited extension library, Edge is still a safe option.

2. Google Chrome: probably to go to browser for most of us, Google Chrome has phishing and malware protection built-in, safe browsing, sandboxing and is updated regularly. There are some concerns around privacy due to data collection, but with fast performance and a large library of extensions, Google Chrome is a great choice for secure web browsing.

1. Brave: another browser that many of us may not be familiar with, Brave takes the number one spot for focusing on cyber security features. As default ads, trackers and third-party cookies are blocked, their search engine doesn’t track searches and there are a range of other security applications included also.

Brave claims to be 3x faster than other browsers because they block any malicious activity. Though it may not work smoothly on every site and may have fewer extension options than Chrome, it is still the best browser to use if you want to keep your activities private.

Ultimately, what you browse and the sites you visit will have more of an impact on your cyber security than what browser you use, but if you’re looking for an extra layer of protection it is worth keeping these results in mind.
