Do I need a cyber security audit?

24th February 2025

The National Audit Office created a report on the UK government’s resilience to cyber-attacks* – shouldn’t you be as thorough with your vulnerable systems?

You may think your cyber security is all-encompassing: you have they latest antivirus and antimalware software, your systems are up to date, you have firewalls installed, your data is encrypted – your IT provider has tried their best to ensure your systems are secure.

However, while you may think this, could it still be beneficial to get a second opinion? Other people have different skillsets, look for different things and have different experience informing them – sometimes it takes an external perspective to spot something that you cannot.

Take an example: you are preparing for an important presentation, and you think the presentation is perfect. You have double checked everything, but wisely you send it to a friend or colleague to check first. They then send it back with a few adjustments you failed to spot, which you make before the big presentation.

That is what a security audit can offer, another perspective on your IT systems. By uncovering any hidden security risks that you could not, they can reassure you that your system and your data is secure.

Additionally, cyber security audits ensure your systems are up to the latest industry standards and legal requirements. If there are any problems or shortcomings an external audit can guide you as to where you need to invest.

True, the audit may come back and show that there are no issues with your IT systems – but is that a risk you would be willing to take? Your business’ reputation is on the line, so why take the chance?
